Rapid prototyping

Upcycle a useable design

The retro Suntour shifter works very well for the stock gear-set but now it’s time for an upgrade. The original shifter works, however the gear range has grown. This means the drum no longer has enough length around the cable-pull circumference.

CAD and additive to the rescue

An hour in Fusion 360 gives the general shape and a parametric drum. A cheap 3d printer, Ender 3 in my case, prints out a useable prototype in approximately an hour.

Slicing the stl is accomplished in Cura. Note only 10 grams of PLA filament required, costing under under 2 SEK.
